Chant is a prayer the singer is offering unto God as a means to communicate with Him,  when we chant and speak in tongues we tend to speak what mortals don't understand. It's more of a communication with the spiritual realm.

And the method that I could use at that time was to just chant and long for him because I wouldn't think of something to say"
